How "VANISHED" Ended

Midway through November sweeps, FOX realized their slick, yet often preposterous abduction drama "Vanished" lost all steam on Friday nights (surprise, surprise) and decided to ditch the series, streaming the final 4 unaired episodes over MySpace. So, how was the Sara Collins case resolved?

When "Vanished" premiered in August on FOX Mondays, its "Prison Break" lead-in gave it a decent sampling of over 8 million viewers. Over 7 million of them watched the show on regular basis.

Then "Heroes" premiered in late September and one million viewers switched over to NBC. FOX decided to move the series to Friday night "death zone", the one night it has never been successful on ('The X-Files' being the only exception).

The inept programming move was designed to help Jerry Bruckheimer's new series "Justice" to survive, but it ended up costing both series their life as neither show managed to add viewers in their respective new timeslots on Monday and Friday nights.

Viewers of FOX Mondays have learned to suspend their disbelief after many heart-pounding hours of "24" and "Prison Break". Despite that "Vanished" was often accused by TV critics of being on the edge of utterly ridiculous.

Surprisingly, the show had actually improved to a great extent in its final hours (including the first of the unaired episodes), but it all came crashing down in the rushed, contrived and disappointing series finale.

Here is a little recap for those who missed the end of "Vanished":

8. THE AFTERMATH (aired November 3)

Following the brutal assassination of agent Kelton (Gale Harold), agent Lucas (Eddie Cibrian) takes over the Sara Collins abduction case.

Senator's daughter Marcy asks her mother to help her get boyfriend Ben out of jail. She agrees and leaves town with son Max.

Senator Collins is flown by private plane to Washington D.C., but the pilot veers him off-course to North Carolina, where he meets Sara's abductors as well as Sara herself, tied to a chair.

The men demand that the Senator confirm Rainer on the Supreme Court. FBI locates one of the men (the assassin who murdered Kelton), but he commits suicide by slashing his own throat in front of them.

9. THE NEW WORLD (aired November 10)

In a truly exceptional episode, the viewers are finally shown the cell in which Sara Collins is kept and exposed to mental torture.

After she is injected with a micro-transmitter into her arm, a man pretending to act in her best interest visits Sara on regular basis trying to persuade her that her husband has moved on without her.

Using information from dead assassin's cell phone, the FBI locates a research facility where scientists are examining an ancient looking document. Following a shootout, the researchers run away and the FBI only manages to capture a part of the document in digital form.

An FBI specialist determines the people who kidnapped Sara Collins were in a possession of one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest surviving transcriptions of The Bible. When they were found in 1947 several chapters were missing including Ezekiel 40.

A man named Aaron Hemsley is at the center of the conspiracy. A celebrated biblical scholar, Hemsley appears to have found something so disturbing in the Dead Sea Scrolls of Ezekial 40 that he killed his entire research team in order to hide his findings.

Hemsley is in prison waiting for his execution about to take place in 4 days.

Marcy is shocked to learn that her father is about to give into the blackmailers' demands and visits judge Rainer with whom she had an affair. She asks him to step down or face public humiliation when she reveals that he is the father of her unborn child, conceived when she was a minor.

Sara realizes another woman is being kept in the cell next to hers.

10. THE CELL (streamed November 17)

The feds manage to find the cypher wheel used to decode the biblical document and add it to evidence, only to have two men working on the side of the conspiracy break into the federal headquarters in Atlanta in order to steal the wheel back.

Both are slain by Agents Mei and Lucas, but not before they take one agent's life and destroy an entire floor of the office building.

Hemsley's references to apocalyptic occurrences in the Bible when interviewed by Lucas lead them to see the seriousness of what the documents might represent. They realize Judge Rainer is to be put on the Supreme Court in order to help overturn Hemsley's death sentence.

Marcy decides to follow up on her threat and contacts Judy Nash wishing to tell her story on live television. The night before the broadcast, however, she wakes up in pain covered in blood realizing she may have miscarried her baby.

The FBI tells Hemsley they know his wife is actually alive and the people behind the conspiracy have kidnapped her. Hemsley drops the insanity act and asks the FBI to help her, promising cooperation.

It is revealed his wife is the woman kept next to Sara.

11. THE PROFFER (streamed November 24)

At this point, the writers were told they had to wrap up the storylines by episode 13, rather than 22 as originally planned. Suddenly, losing 9 episodes, the series loses its sense of pacing rushing towards a forced conclusion.

The FBI manages to locate the high-tech underground compound in the middle of a national park where Sara is being kept. They storm the premises killing some of her captors, but the man who tried to trick her into thinking her husband no longer loves her and Hemsley's wife have disappeared.

During the shootout, Sara escapes not knowing the FBI is trying to save her. Soon, though, she encounters the police telling them who she is.

Test results from Marcy's pregnancy increase suspicions of foul play. She discloses to her boyfriend Ben she was raped by judge Rainer and he may have induced her miscarriage after she had blackmailed him.

Senator Collins tries to prevent judge Rainer from using his new power to the benefit of the conspirators by revealing to other judges his intentions with the Hemsley case.

12. THE VELOCITY OF SARA (streamed December 1)

The feds are withing minutes of rescuing Sara Collins, but a tracking device previously injected in her arm hinders her escape and the Sheriff's station is targeted by fake feds. Sara however manages to escape once again.

Sara's former lover, Peter Manning resurfaces in this episode and finds out the little girl Sara's parents are trying to keep away from him is indeed his and Sara's daughter.

Max and his mother are back as the FBI gets hold of a tape where Max is venting his anger and trashes Sara. They realize the tape was made while he was in alcohol recovery at a rehab center called Encompass.

Coincidentally, the helicopter that the feds were concurrently trying to track down was registered to Encompass Holdings. Senator Collins however discloses Max was sent to the center after Sara had recommended it.

The FBI learn that many years ago before she even met her husband Sara Collins had herself been treated at the center as well as exposed to shock therapy and Senator Collins' father was involved in it.

That would imply their marriage had been arranged by him and the conspirators, for whatever reason.

13. WARM SPRINGS (streamed December 8)

This is the drama's rushed and contrived series finale filled with numerous twists and turns, that promised to resolve the Sara Collins' kidnapping, but ultimately failed to answer many of the core questions.

The men behind the conspiracy (Wallace Rainer, Senator Collins' father, Judy Nash's TV network CEO and even the FBI senior official - agent Lucas' boss) are revealed to the viewers.

Sara Collins had been treated at the Encompass rehab facility years before she even met Senator Collins, and she was observed by his father while being tortured.

Marcy's boyfriend Ben flies to Washington and shoots Wallace Rainer, as a revenge for what he had done to her, possibly killing him.

Believing mistakingly her husband Senator Collins may have never loved her, Sara escapes not only the conspirators but also the FBI to meet at the end of the episode with Peter Manning, apparently her true love.

They meet on his boat and leave with intention to meet her parents and their daughter in Orlando.

Senator Collins remains with his former wife and their children.

THE END

The questions that remained unanswered:

We learned who the conspirators were and why they kidnapped Sara Collins - they tried to force Senator Collins to approve Judge Rainer's nomination for the Supreme Court, so Rainer could overturn Hemsley's death sentence and get a hold of him, as he was the key to unlocking the shocking biblical document.

What we don't know is what was so special about Sara Collins that she had been tortured at Encompass years before she even met Senator Collins and whether their marriage to his son was arranged and if so, why?

Why did Sara Collins' parents try to hide their granddaughter from her father Peter Manning and how will they react to seeing him back with Sara?

Also, what was so shocking about the document that had been uncovered by Hemsley that caused him to kill everyone on his team?

Where is his wife and what will happen to them?

Is Senator Collins' former wife and the mother of Max and Marcy a part of the conspiracy, and if so will Senator Collins ever learn that?

Will the conspirators ever be uncovered and forced to pay for what they had done?

Once again, FOX's last minute decision to end a highly serialized and at times intriguing drama left a true mess behind, one that will end up being sold to international markets to make up for the high production cost.

It is unfortunate that "Vanished" had not originally been conceived as a 13-episode mini-series. Instead, FOX ended up with another failed attempt at launching the next big serialized thriller.

"Vanished" For Good

Just one day after FOX pulled "Vanished" for the rest of the sweeps promising to bring the TV series back starting December 1, an official press release from the network has made it clear, the execs are now putting the conspiracy drama out of its misery.

Unlike the previous seasons when ratings-challenged serialized dramas had been taken off air before they wrapped up their storylines causing frustration among their small but normally loyal fan base, this year the TV networks in America are increasingly relying on the Internet to not only provide additional promotion, but also a platform to offer the unaired installments without causing any further damage to their prime-time schedules.

That is why the remaining four episodes of "Vanished" will stream on the drama's MySpace page, with a new episode posted every Friday at 12:01 PT, beginning Nov. 17th. Three episodes will be kept up at a time. The series finale will be posted online on Friday, December 8th.

"Justice", which has also been pulled for the rest of the sweeps and was scheduled to return December 11, will now take over the Friday at 8/7c spot in what is the drama's second move. "Justice" is, however, also considered dead as the remaining 5 episodes now scheduled to air December 1-29 are the show's final. FOX has discontinued production on the series. The network hopes the final episodes of "Justice" will bring more viewers than "Vanished" whose most recent telecast pulled in just 2,9 million.

FOX's "Vanished" Pulled

FOX has decided to pull yet another freshman series from their prime-time schedule making this fall season probably their worst ever.

After scoring season-low 2,9 million viewers last Friday (by comparison even wrestling on The CW posted 4,34 million), FOX's abduction drama "Vanished" will be gone from the schedule for the next two weeks. The drama should return on December 1.

When the Gale Harold-fronted series premiered back in August (on Mondays, following "Prison Break") it attracted almost 9 million viewers. But as the season progressed, the storylines on the show demanded much stronger suspension of disbelief on the part of the viewers and the network lost faith in their leading man, Harold. Following the ridiculous assassination of Harold's character, FOX relaunched the show on Friday nights in November, but the viewers had already abandoned the series.

If FOX honors their commitment to loyal fans of the drama, the remaining four episodes will be burned off by Christmas. The writers have promised to give them a proper conclusion.

"Justice", the series that replaced "Vanished" on Monday nights, has also been pulled earlier this week. "Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy" will take place of "Vanished" this week. Jim Carrey's comedy "Bruce Almighty" airs the following week.

FOX Desperate For "American Idol" and "24"

FOX's prime-time schedule is falling apart. The new shows premiered with poor ratings and then they were gone as baseball took over. Now the baseball is gone and the new shows are back doing even worse. And to add insult to injury, the baseball coverage did not do too well either.

As previously reported, the 4th season premiere of teen soap "The O.C." did so badly last week (a little over 3 million people tuned in), the network decided to air two episodes this week, trying the drama out in its old Wednesday at 9pm slot.

If the show does better (and it could hardly do worse) it may actually stay there. Since the network ordered only 16 episodes this season, it may end up burning those off while "Lost" is off air.

The new reality show "The Rich List" was yanked after only 1 airing as was the Thursday night sitcom "Happy Hour". This is the second hiatus for the latter, so it is safe to assume the comedy no one ever loved and all critics hated will never be back.

The network had already given up on the mystery thriller "Vanished" when it made a decision to move it to TV graveyard known as Friday night. Last week's anemic ratings for the show's return (a little over 3 million, down 50% from the last October episode) only proved it may be gone before we actually find out who and why abducted the senator's wife. If anyone cares, that is.

Then there are freshman dramas "Standoff" and "Justice" that keep on bleeding. They are now both down to about 6 million and the new comedy "Till Death", that FOX is for now forced to stick with, is doing even worse.

But, there is hope. "House", "The Simpsons" and "Prison Break" still have their loyal following. And the network has already started heavy promotion of their megahits "American Idol" (last year's unbelievable January average of over 35 million viewers) and "24" (the counter-terrorist drama clocked in almost 15 million viewers last season) that once again may end up saving the network.

If only January was tomorrow.

"VANISHED" TO END IN DECEMBER

FOX has announced season finale dates for "Prison Break" and "Vanished", the two action-packed dramas that used to air back-to-back on Monday nights. While solid performer "Prison Break" returns next Monday (October 23) at 8/7c, "Vanished" is moving to Friday nights, beginning with October 27 (legal drama "Justice" moves to Mondays at 9/8c).

Just like they did last year, FOX will split the second season of "Prison Break" into two parts. The network has scheduled the "fall finale" (episode #13) for Monday, November 27.

FOX has not decided what they will air in the timeslot when "24" returns for a sixth season in January. The drama "Justice" has not received the back 9 order yet. Also, it is not clear at which point "Prison Break" returns, but again FOX may schedule the second part of its season for March.

Meanwhile, "Vanished" will air through Friday, December 8 at 8/7c. Episode #13 will most probably be the drama's series finale. Although the network does not want to use the word "cancellation" it is now almost certain FOX has pulled the plug.

"VANISHED" RETURNS NEXT WEEK

Pricey new serials have not been a great return on investment so far this season as CBS's "Smith" and NBC's "Kidnapped" have clearly shown. In case of the latter, as well as the FOX underdog "Vanished", which moves to Friday nights starting October 27, it seems the higher price tag has at least provided their respective miniscule fan bases with an unexpected benefit - the networks are more patient with the new shows and will at least burn off the remaining episodes of the original 13-episode order giving loyal fans some sort of closure.

Unlike FOX's "Reunion" last year that never shed any light on its central murder mystery, the viewers of FOX's "Vanished" will indeed find out who abudected Sara Collins and why by the end of November. Here are some new promo images from the 10/27 episode.

FOX DROPS HAROLD, MOVES "VANISHED"

Did you see what happened on "Vanished" earlier this week? Quite a major development. The main star of the FOX abduction series was killed off in a spectacular assassination increasing the Monday night FOX death toll already set high by the lead-in "Prison Break" (poor Tweener, and not-so-poor senator Tancredi).

Now, that would have been quite a revolutionary move if "24" killed off Jack Bauer. Although serialized thrillers are known for their unusually high death tolls and keeping their fans on the edge of their seats as none of the characters are ever safe, killing off the star carrying the show almost never happens.

But, "Vanished" is no "24". In fact, the preposterous FOX drama has struggled both creatively and ratings-wise in its first seven installments. Although FOX insists the decision to fire Gale Harold, known to cable audiences for his critically-acclaimed role of promiscuous Brian Kinney on Showtime's gay saga "Queer As Folk", was a creative one, rumour has it that the network was not happy with the casting decision from early on.

For this reason, the producers brought on Eddie Cibrian ("Third Watch", "Invasion") hoping his star-power would shake things up and bring higher ratings. Unfortunately, the network has just announced it is moving the drama to Friday nights at 9/8c (in place of 'Nanny 911') effective October 27.

And despite the fact that same timeslot had once made a little show called "The X-Files" a major blockbuster, Friday night is known as the phantom zone where poorly rated series are shipped off to die a slow and painful death. That means the remaining six episodes starring Eddie Cibrian may very well be the very last we see of "Vanished".

PRISON BREAK & VANISHED CASTING

Callie Thorn of "Rescue Me" fame (Sheila) is joining the FOX drama "Prison Break" in early November.

The actress whose previous credits include ER, The Wire and Law & Order: CI/SVU, will play Pam, the former wife of Michael Scoffield's (Wenthworth Miller) nemesis Mahone (William Fichtner). Michael meets up with Pam in an attempt to uncover some dirt on the FBI agent.

Eddie Cibrian (Third Watch, Invasion) joins the other FOX Monday night drama "Vanished" next week in the episode entitled "Black Box". He will play FBI agent Daniel Lucas.

Both dramas will air through October 3 and then take three weeks off for baseball play-offs coverage on FOX.

WHO WILL WIN? WHO WILL FAIL?
Vanished (FOX)

The new television season is officially under way. The Big Four are airing a night of all-new programming this evening including two series premieres: "The Class" on CBS and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" on NBC.

Some new shows have already premiered. As anxious network executives anticipate the next day's Nielsen reports, the question on everyone mind is: Who will be the first to swing the cancellation axe? And how do the shows that have already premiered look so far?

VANISHED (FOX, Mondays at 9/8c) The fast-paced drama about the disappearance of a senator's wife opened on August 21 with solid results (8,65 mil viewers), then slid moderately to 8, 53 mil.

In the third week FOX ordered three more scripts giving the show an early bode of confidence. The series however lost a million viewers (7,56 mil) and did not benefit last week from being delayed due to Presidential Address (series-low, 4.3/6).

Tonight, FOX airs the fifth installment of the series (following an all-new Prison Break) at 9/8c.
