"Mad Men" Wins Golden Globe as Best Drama

If there is any silver lining in that hideous disaster of a cloud that was last night's "Golden Globes" special it is most definitely the recognition of AMC's brilliant period drama "Mad Men" and its star Jon Hamm.

AMC's first venture into the original series territory about the boardrooms and the bedrooms of the 1960s New York turned out to be a sleek, sexy and smart drama about egomaniacal advertising executives and the women that dared to love them.

Here are several stills from this remarkable series known for its meticulous attention to detail and accurate portrayal of an era marked by astoundingly casual prejudice and unabashed sexual manipulation.

AMC has commissioned a second season of 13 episodes, but its premiere date may be delayed due to the ongoing writers' strike in Hollywood. Season 1 has yet to be released on DVD.

ABC's "Ugly Betty" Wins Best Comedy At The Golden Globes

JANUARY 16, 2007: Congratulations to the cast of ABC's freshman Thursday night comedy "Ugly Betty" which managed to beat out veteran competitors such as "Desperate Housewives" at last night's Golden Globes ceremony in Hollywood and win the Best Comedy award.

Initially, the network had little faith in this telenovela parody and it scheduled "Betty" on Friday nights.

It was only after the initial buzz had spread that the network realized what a gem it had on its hands and moved the show to anchor Thursday nights.

The high production values, the unique and rich visual impact (created by the contract of warm "Suarez" and cold "Mode" colors), the strong comedic performances of the entire cast, the hilarious rapid-fire comebacks and a truly beautiful message at its heart make this wonderful series a real Must-See TV.

Teary-eyed America Ferrera who also won the award for Best Actress in Comedy (beating out two "Housewives") said she hears every day from girls inspired by her character, Betty Suarez, saying it "truly brings a new face to television."

Golden Globe Nominations Announced

Nominations for the January 13 Golden Globes Awards have been announced in Hollywood this morning by "Heroes" babe Hayden Panettiere, actor Ryan Reynolds and director Quentin Tarantino. Here is a list of nominees in the TV-related categories.




I will personally be rooting for Donald Sutherland who is absolutely brilliant in his role as Tripp Darling on ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money."

I am also hoping AMC's original drama "Mad Men" about ad execs in the 1960s will be recognized for its outstanding quality.

In the comedy category my vote most certainly goes to ABC's enchanting fantasy procedural "Pushing Daisies."

I am very disappointed though that ABC's comedy "Ugly Betty" (which has been on the roll this season) and drama "Lost" (which has bounced back last spring after a somewhat tedious Others-centric mini-season with a string of truly amazing episodes) have been left out.

January 2008 ceremony may be affected by the writers' strike as some of the actors may opt to boycott it in support of the striking writers.

"Grey's Anatomy" Wins Best Drama at the Golden Globes

ABC was the big winner on Monday night at the Golden Globes when its female-friendly Thursday night line-up of "Ugly Betty" and "Grey's Anatomy" won the top honors. The blockbuster medical series was named Best Drama.

"Every single intern at Seattle Grace Hospital would say, 'Seriously?"' said an exuberant Shonda Rhimes, creator and executive producer of "Grey's Anatomy."

Last week, the drama was also honored at People's Choice Awards where it was named Favorite Drama.

Golden Globes 2007: TV Nominations

The 64th Annual Golden Globes nominations have been announced and here is the list of nominated series and actors in television categories. The awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on Monday, January 15.

ABC is leading the TV nominations with 11 nods, including previous Golden Globe winners "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives".

I am very happy to see both Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman in the Lead Actress/Comedy category as their performances on "Desperate Housewives" have proven time and time again they are both actresses of a truly exceptional caliber.

Although I do thoroughly enjoy the comics-inspired antics on NBC's genre drama "Heroes", I did raise an eyebrow over its inclusion in the Best Drama category over NBC's football drama "Friday Night Lights", a truly remarkable series with rarely seen warmth and depth on prime-time television.

The Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 90 people who write about the film industry for overseas media.

Some critics question the validity of the Globes, saying the group has many part-time journalists and reporters who write for obscure outlets.

But the Globes have long stood as the second-biggest Hollywood honors after the Oscars.

Academy Awards contenders can solidify their prospects with a win at the Globes, which serve as solid forecasts for how the Oscars might play out.
