TV Ratings: CBS Beats ABC (11/8/07)
How does CBS always manage to pull this off? I never watch their shows. And no one I know ever watches their shows. And there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of buzz about their crime-infested line-up. And yet they are the #1 network. But I digress.
The net's winning line-up of "Survivor," "CSI" and "Without a Trace" easily won the night pulling in over 19 million viewers on average.
Both "CSI" and "Grey's Anatomy" rose from their average levels this fall. As usual, CSi won the night in total viewers, and "Grey's" was hot with the 18-49 crowd.
A crossover with "Without a Trace" however lifted the 10pm drama to its season high of over 21 million viewers. Following the success of "NCIS," it's been a great week for CBS. Well, if we disregard the strike.
Although NBC's once-dominant "ER" scored almost only 8.42 million viewers (down from almost 15 million at this time last year) the show sadly remains one of NBC's top-rated dramas. How low can you go?
ABC:
Ugly Betty (10.89 million)
Grey's Anatomy (19.30 million)
Big Shots (8.62 million)
CBS:
Survivor: China (14.91 million)
CSI (21.92 million)
Without a Trace (21.39 million)
NBC:
My Name Is Earl (7.66 million)
30 Rock (6.61 million)
The Office (8.29 million)
Scrubs (6.36 million)
ER (8.42 million)
FOX:
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (8.77 million)
Don't Forget the Lyrics (6.48 million)
The CW:
Smallville (4.95 million)
Supernatural (3.01 million)

CBS has always been much older skewing with these crime procedurals. That is why I think ABC needs to balance their hip younger shows with some more procedurals that tend to repeat better (which will be important if this writer's strike keeps on going). Isn't it sad that ER is beating Bionic Woman now? A show with so much hype...I can totally see them bringing back ER now that they don't really have any mega hits on NBC.
I'm not sure about ABC going into the procedural direction. Yes, they seem to be able to do it ('Women's Murder Club'), but we have more than enough of those on CBS.
Can't they come up with a young hip show along the lines of DH, B&S or DSM which would have self-contained episodes that repeat better like Dallas used to do it the beginning?
It's a bit depressing that people are choosing Are you smarter than a 5th Grader over 30 Rock which has the sharpest writing on television right now.
To CBS' defence: The CSIs (except the Horatio Cane hour) and especially the brilliantly written and cast WaT are quite different from typical procedurals. They are nearly the same type like ER or GA with characters having a life and personality which leads off the usual crime hunt stories.
Sometimes CSI/WaT does them play more, sometimes less. I usually only watch serialized drama but those Jerry Bruckheimer shows also get me tuning in each week.
I agree with Roland, I can see ER coming back next season. Good to see Ugly Betty getting 10 million
