Now these are the ratings I've been looking forward to seeing. How did the sole survivor of ABC's failed Wednesday night line-up "Private Practice" do in its new timeslot following parent series "Grey's Anatomy"?

Given the fact that "Grey's Anatomy" plummeted to a new season-low (and I would think series-low) of only 13.71 million viewers, the show's audience of 9.03 million meant a decent 65% retention rate (it could have been better, but most of its predecessors in the timeslot have done worse).

This was of course an improvement over its recent Wednesday night figures where the show averaged 7-8 million viewers. Then again, its lead-in on Wednesdays "Pushing Daisies" was almost three times weaker than "Grey's Anatomy."

The ratings last night were obviously affected by BCS Championship game on CBS (many other shows slid to season lows). We'll have a clearer picture of where Thursday night shows stand next week.

"People's Choice Awards" and Barbara Walters interview with Patrick Swayze took top honors last night; "Knight Rider" continued to post lackluster ratings.

Most of the programming on Wednesday was in repeats. CW's new show "Fear is Real" got off to a very modest start, even by lax netlet standards. The 2-hour "People's Choice Awards" averaged about 9 million viewers.

The night's top show was the Barbara Walters interview with actor Patrick Swayze who opened up about his battle with cancer (12.57 million viewers, 3.1 among 18-49).

Although the CBS awards show generated the night's highest demo figures between 9-10pm (3.2), the entire 2-hour ceremony averaged 2.9, behind Barbara Walters' 3.1.

FOX's "24" Season 7 Premiere Party

This Sunday, FOX's "24" finally returns after a strike-induced year-off (actually, 20 months off). It all begins, as always, with 4 hours of adrenalin-pumping Jack Bauer action, who is moving to Washington, D.C. this season. Actor Kiefer Sutherland and the rest of the "24" team celebrated...


...the return of the FOX clock-ticking action series a couple of nights ago at a premiere party in Hollywood. The network honchos would of course like to know if the show will manage to generate decent ratings, following a critically-panned and ratings-challenged 6th season.


This year's 2-hour prequel which aired in November under the title "Redemption" did very well (especially in comparison to the rest of FOX's prime-time, which has been rather underwhelming all fall long). Now if Jack and the gang can keep those numbers up for another 24 hours...

Thursdays Ratings; VP Debate Breaks Records

Did the highly anticipated face-off between Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Delaware senator Joe Biden score as high ratings as many had expected? You betcha, Joe!

The VP debate was the highest rated VP debate ever and the highest rated debate overall since the second round of Bill Clinton, Ross Perot and George Bush debating in 1992, which believe it or not scored exactly the same ratings.

Thursday's event scored 69.9 million viewers across 3 broadcast and 3 cable news networks with most viewers flocking to ABC for its coverage (13.1 million). FOX News was the most successful on cable, scoring 11.1 million, its highest ratings ever.

In other news, "Ugly Betty" lost some steam at 8pm. The ABC comedy scored 8.58 million viewers.

When the show originally premiered in 2006 it averaged 15 million viewers. Last year at this time most of those people who may have been intrigued by the show's early episodes, but later stopped watching, were gone as the show averaged 10 million.

With no scripted competition at 9pm, The CW's "Supernatural" scored 3.57 million viewers, retaining 90% of "Smallville" audience.

ABC Wednesday Ratings Meltdown

Highly-anticipated ABC Wednesdays got off to a lackluster start this week as the trio of sophomore dramas "Pushing Daisies," "Private Practice" and "Dirty Sexy Money" pulled in just 6.5-8 million viewers.

ABC tried to spin the numbers in their press release, but the best they could do is say that the 2nd season opener of whimsical "Pushing Daisies" beat NBC's "Knight Rider" in key female demos.

The truth is the show generated only 6.32 million viewers vs. the hideous "Knight Rider", which actually went up in the ratings to 7.56 million.

"Private Practice" at 9pm pulled in only 8.05 million viewers, a far cry from the 14 million who tuned into the series premiere last September, or the 11 million that the show averaged during its short 9-episode run last fall.

Finally at 10pm, Dynasty-esque sudser "Dirty Sexy Money" kept 7.15 million viewers tuned to ABC. That is a little higher than its last episode last year (6.7 million) and the show did retain almost 90% of the PP audience.

Unfortunately, only "Private Practice" built its audience during the hour, both "Pushing Daisies" and "Dirty Sexy Money" shed viewers during their respective hours.

"Fringe" Premiere & "90210" Week #2 Ratings

Has all the hype paid off? "Fringe" series premiere ratings have arrived, along with week #2 of "90210" and the series premiere of CW's new soap "Privileged."

The 90-minute premiere of "Fringe" pulled in 9 million viewers, generating a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49.

Although that is a somewhat decent start for the series, I do believe FOX expected higher figures. Even 2005 premiere of "Prison Break" did a little better with less hype.

The ratings should however improve in the coming weeks with FOX's #1 scripted hit "House" giving the new drama a little lead-in push.

Over on The CW, one third of viewers who watched last week's premiere of "90210" were gone, as the redux took a big plunge from 4.9 to only 3.3 million viewers, with a very modest 1.7 rating among adults 18-49.

Perhaps CW executives should have waited before boasting about its record-breaking figures last week. Given the original show's cult status, last week's solid sampling was a sure shot.

Finally, the new soap "Privileged" got a modest 2.9 million viewers for its 9pm series premiere, leading out of "90210."

Perhaps, CW prexy Dawn Ostroff (a.k.a. Everwood-killer) was not on the mark with her strategy of programming similar shows every day after all. Then again, there's always a way to spin everything.

Ratings: Monday (September 8, 2008)

Did week #2 of "Gossip Girl" live up to its strong season premiere? Was the return of "Sarah Connor" a success? And did FOX's "Prison Break" get better or worse after last week's dismal return? Monday night results are in.

Good news for The CW; not so good news for FOX. The 20th episode of the teen soap scored 3.16 million viewers, down from 3.38 million it lured to the netlet for last week's Hamptons-based premiere.

The episode was however 2nd best ever in key demos and it built its 18-49 audience from a year-ago telecast by as much as 45%. I'm sure Parents Television Council will be thrilled about that.

As for FOX's "Sarah Connor," the Terminator series was back with only 6.34 million viewers, down from 7.98 million it pulled in for the 2-hour 1st season finale on March 3.

The show did win its timeslot among adults 18-49. Will it do equally well when NBC's "Chuck" gets back into the prime time mix?

Finally, Terminator's lead-out "Prison Break" actually managed to build a little on these numbers and tie CBS sitcom repeats in adults 18-49.

But with only 6.48 million viewers tuning in, the show is still down a million from last year and down 3 million from season 1. This may indeed be the final year for "Prison Break", especially if "Fringe" and "Dollhouse" do well.

Ratings: FOX's "Bones" Wins

Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz successfully returned to FOX Wednesdays last night with a London-based big-budgeted 4th season opener of "Bones" helping the network win the night among adults 18-49.

The 2-hour episode scored an average of 9.69 million viewers, peaking with 10.22 million viewers in the second hour.

Elsewhere, The CW launched a new cycle of its hit reality contest "America's Next Top Model" featuring a transgendered contestant. The 2-hour season premiere scored 3.48 million viewers, down from 3.80 million who tuned into the February 20 premiere of the previous cycle.

The audience erosion is more visible in comparison with the launch of the fall 2007 cycle - September 19, 2007 premiere generated 5.15 million viewers.

Ratings: 90210 Premiere Breaks CW Records

CW president Dawn Ostroff can breathe more easily today. The 2-hour premiere of the much anticipated "90210" redux was a major success (by modest netlet standards) grabbing some of CW's best demo figures ever.

The show opened the night for The CW with 4.54 million viewers tuning in. It then began to grow reaching 4.88 and 5.14 million viewers in the next couple of half-hours, respectively. The pilot ended its run with 5.06 million viewers watching the conclusion.

"90210" was CW's highest rated premiere ever in the coveted adults 18-49 demo. The show also reached best numbers ever in key female demos, The CW network's target audience.



Of course, when we say "ever" it means - since September 2006 when The CW was launched, following the merger of its predecessors UPN and The WB which used to generate even higher ratings for its most successful shows like "7th Heaven" or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

The young network however rarely exceeds the 5 million mark - a figure that has lately become difficult to reach even for its biggest hits "Smallville" and "America's Next Top Model."

The 2-hour telecast of the new "90210" on Tuesday night averaged 4.9 million viewers. Obviously, this is a great start. But there has been a lot of hype surrounding the premiere all summer long and little competition on other networks. Will "90210" continue to break CW records?

"Gossip Girl" Ratings: Solid Premiere!

"Gossip Girl" got off to a strong sophomore start on Monday night as its Hamptons-based season premiere episode generated some of the show's best demo numbers ever.

The show scored 3.38 million viewers (well above its season 1 average) and best ratings ever in adults 18-34 (2.3/7), women 18-34 (3.2/10), adults 18-49, women 18-49 (2.3/6).



Although the show launched last fall with similar figures on Wednesday nights after "America's Next Top Model", this year it managed to match those levels without any lead-in support, now anchoring CW's Monday nights.

It appears all that summer buzz (also created by conservative organizations' anti-"Gossip Girl" efforts) is finally turning into some eyeballs that The CW so desperately needs to survive.

Has Controversy Hurt "Swingtown" Ratings?

The image above shows just how far the orgies go on CBS' light adult drama "Swingtown." That didn't prevent those losers from the PTC (who still don't understand how to use their clickers) from playing the parent card again and start more brouhaha against the show. But has their noise actually hurt the ratings?

"Swingtown" did lose some groove shedding over one million pairs of eyeballs in its second outing last Thursday (7.25 million). But so far it's hard to say whether the PTC campaign has had any impact since most new dramas drop in week #2. So far, the show is doing as well as any new summer show airing at 10pm would be doing.

Will the show fade away as "Cane" did last fall or will it level off with NBA finals out of the way? I'll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed for the latter, as the period drama's fashion, music and vintage product placement (not to mention the wicked cast including a shirtless Grant Show) has kept me hooked.

TV Ratings: "Grey's Anatomy" (Season 4)

ABC's blockbuster medical soap "Grey's Anatomy" lost some ratings muscle in its fourth season. Take a look at how MerDer and the other love-stricken and sex-crazed docs at Seattle Grace did in the Nielsens, after the jump.

The Shonda Rhimes-penned series which launched on Sunday nights in the spring of 2005 (leading out of "Desperate Housewives") gradually became a hit, reaching its series high in February 2006 with the first part of the amazing Super Bowl "bomb episode."

That success led to the show's move to Thursday nights in the fall of 2006 where it successfully battled CBS' well-established procedural "CSI" with an average of 19.22 million viewers tuning in (the infamous Mer after-life episode was seen by over 27 million people in February 2007).

But a somewhat gloomy tone of the third season, the writers' focus on the new spin-off "Private Practice" and behind-the-scenes drama with Isaiah Washington's homophobic incident, may have put a dent in the show's ratings.

This year's writers' strike and the show's 3-month long winter absence didn't help. "Grey's Anatomy" lost an average of 3 million viewers this year, falling down to 15.92 million (for the season September 24, 2007 - May 25, 2008, including repeat broadcasts).

TV Ratings: "Swingtown's" Solid Launch

CBS' adult drama "Swingtown" about couples enjoying group sex in the 1970s got off to a solid start on Thursday night skewing largely female audience. Some folks may have tuned in just to see what all the fuss was about. But will most of them be back next Thursday?


The pilot of "Swingtown" pulled in 8.58 million viewers and scored a 2.8/8 rating among adults 18-49 (by comparison, a repeat of its lead-in "CSI" at 9:00pm generated a 2.3/7 rating, therefore "Swingtown" grew about 12% in the demo).


The show aired opposite an NBA Finals game on ABC which won the night with over 10 million viewers and another drama debut, NBC's new anthology series "Fear Itself," which lured only 5.23 million viewers (with a 2.0/6 rating in the demo).


Most shows airing during the summer when the viewing levels are low tend to struggle to generate more than 7-8 million viewers, so if these numbers hold up "Swingtown" could be considered a moderate summer hit.

TV Ratings: Desperate Housewives (Season 4)

Daily TV ratings reports will not be posted on Televisionista during the summer. I will however post ratings of selected summer shows and take a look back at how some of TV's hottest shows did last season. And I begin with "Desperate Housewives."

Following a series high of over 30 million viewers who tuned in to see the first season finale of "Desperate Housewives" in May 2005, it was all downhill for the Marc Cherry-penned dramedy (well, how could they go any further?) in seasons 2 and 3.

But this season, Dana Delany joined the cast, as did a gay couple; Lynette battled cancer; Bree faked a pregnancy, Susan gave birth to her child; and Gaby ditched her evil mayor and reunited with Carlos.

Oh yes, and there was a twister, a more compelling mystery, a bunch of great guest stars, a glimpse of Gale Harold, and a controversial 5-year leap into a troubled future.

It appears that was enough to put the buzz back into the 4-year old series which bounced back in the ratings after hitting a series low in the spring of 2007. An average of about a million pairs of eyeballs were added this year and here's how individual episodes fared:

As you can see, the show opened strong on September 30 with the 3rd highest rating of the season. The infamous tornado episode on December 2 gave the series its season high and helped break the 20 million mark. The January follow-up was the second highest rated episode of the season.

Then in April, the show returned following the conclusion of the crippling writers' strike and the ratings took a plunge. Something very similar happened last spring, so we might want to put the blame on warmer weather and longer days.

The fact that second to last episode which aired on May 11 hit season low of 15.4 million viewers is somewhat worrisome. The 2-hour season finale shot back up, but only to 16.8 million viewers, closing the season on a par with the May 4 episode.

TV Ratings: 2007-2008 Season Top-200

The 2007-2008 TV season has now ended and here is the final score - the top 200 programs on 5 broadcast networks ranked according to their average number of viewers (including repeat airings).

"American Idol" and "Dancing with the Stars" have remained at the top of the chart with their multiple weekly airings.

The two reality contests however experienced different trends this year - FOX's blockbuster has lost over 3 million viewers year to year, while ABC's increasingly popular competition added about a million viewers.

Although "House" lost about 2 million viewers year to year, it is now the hottest drama on television, as some other shows experienced even greater losses. Last year's champ "CSI," for example, lost about 4 million viewers.

But it was not all bad news for network drama. ABC's "Desperate Housewives" managed to rejuvenate itself in its 4th season adding about 1 million viewers, although its ratings were somewhat softer as the show returned post-strike.

Most shows however declined in the 2007-2008 season: "Grey's Anatomy" lost over 3 million viewers, as did "CSI: Miami." "Lost" was down more than 4 million, "Heroes" lost about 3 million, and "Ugly Betty" was off about 2 million.

The hottest new show was FOX's trashy "Moment of Truth" with almost 15 million viewers, although that show heavily capitalized on its "American Idol" lead-in.

The most successful new sitcom was "Samantha Who," again some might argue that show got plenty of support from "Dancing with the Stars."

The hottest new drama was FOX's "Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles." This is however a little disputable, since the show actually averaged about 8 million viewers, and its final season score of 10.84 million viewers was inflated by the pilot episode which aired after a football game which attracted almost 40 million viewers.

ABC's "Private Practice" is the true winner in the New Drama category, since that show did score about 11 million viewers during most of its run.

The fall cycle of The CW's "America's Next Top Model" was its top-rated program. The show however lost over a million viewers this spring. Although its wrestling show "Friday Night Smackdown" came in second, the network will ditch that show next year to focus on young women with fare like "Gossip Girl" and "90210."

American Idol managed to bounce back after last week's season-low, albeit it failed to break the 24 million mark.

"Dancing with the Stars" was the second most watched telecast of the night, although CBS' underrated "NCIS" wasn't far behind.

The series finale of the just-axed "Women's Murder Club" lost half the "Dancing" audience, although both shows skew older demos.

TV Ratings: Monday (May 12, 2008)

ABC's "Samantha Who?" and "The Bachelor" ended their respective seasons last night, Britney Spears hit Barney's sheets again on "How I Met Your Mother," and a new season of "American Gladiators" premiered on NBC. How well did all they do? Monday's ratings, a click away.

Ouch! That's gotta hurt. The 2nd season of NBC's "American Gladiators" redux opened on a very disappointing note pulling in fewer than 5 million viewers. The trip down memory lane has obviously worn off. Now, if only NBC learned to come up with original ideas. Perhaps they would last longer.

The reappearance of Britney Spears on "How I Met Your Mother" could not lift the show to the same level as her original appearance in March (10.5 million), but the comedy did break the 9 million mark and help score almost 15% more pairs of eyeballs than its lead-in "The Big Bang Theory."

TV Ratings: Sunday (May 11, 2008)

The ratings are back and here is now a look at Mother's Day figures, including the season finales of "Survivor" and "Brothers & Sisters."

Although "Desperate Housewives" have averaged well over 18 million viewers this season, the most recent post-strike episodes have fallen to 15-16 million and last night was no exception. The show however suffered a similar setback in the spring 2007. Perhaps more people use their DVRs when the weather improves and the days get longer.

The season finale of its lead-out "Brothers & Sisters" posted ratings on a par with its season average levels, which (given losses in the "Desperate" timeslot) has improved its retention rate now exceeding 70%. I also can't imagine too many viewers skipping the show because of the same-sex wedding storyline, as its audience is mostly liberal and used to gay content.

"Survivor" ended its Micronesia cycle at levels very similar to last year's Fiji ender which pulled in 13.63 million viewers on May 13, 2007.

An all-new episode of FOX's "Simpsons" scored only a little over 6 million viewers, but those numbers are only a little lower than at the same time last year.

NBC's lackluster line-up was dragged even further down with four repeats of "The Office" scoring fewer than 3 million viewers.

"American Idol" 2008 Ratings Take a Plunge

As "American Idol" races towards its May 21 grand finale and a parent is being banned from the set having crossed the line between constructive input and annoying interference, the FOX reality phenomenon is experiencing a little backstage drama of its own, hitting a 5-year low in the ratings.

Last week's Tuesday night performance show scored 21.25 million viewers, a figure many TV shows today can only dream of.

But in Idol's inflated universe, the show has not been that 'low' since its second season in 2003. Is it this year's talent? Is it that tiring practice of using celebrity mentors? Or is the Idol magic finally wearing thin?

Whatever the reason, the gap between ABC's hit contest "Dancing with the Stars," which has averaged 21.67 million viewers on Monday nights this season, appears to be getting smaller.

Although "Idol" won't be going away any time soon, if the negative trend continues, FOX may have to shake things up a bit or they'll be losing those outrageous $750,000 per 30 seconds ad rates.

TV Ratings (Tue-Thu, April 29-May 1, 2008)

How did "Women's Murder Club" do on Tuesday night? What about the show it replaced, "Boston Legal," that got bumped to Wednesdays? Plus, who's winning the war in the battle for supremacy in the ultimate timeslot on television, Thursdays at 9? All ahead, in the midweek ratings report.

"Women's Murder Club" was on a par with its fall performance on Fridays at 9pm. But that's not necessarily good. Although the show pulled in over 8 million viewers, its 18-49 numbers remain very low (1.9). On the other hand, ABC wanted a procedural. And those shows skew old. It goes with the territory. Just ask CBS.

"Boston Legal" which was forced out of its natural habitat, on Tuesday nights after the "Dancing with the Stars" results show, did not do too well on Wednesday night. Although it appears the legal drama built on total viewership from lead-in "Supernanny", its demo numbers actually decreased 14%.

Finally, on Thursday night, "Ugly Betty" continues to score worrying figures. The show has declined almost 4 million viewers year-to-year. Even more tragic are the losses at Seattle Grace which shed about 6 million pairs of eyeballs year-to-year. Nevertheless, the competing CSI was inferior among younger viewers giving "Grey's Anatomy" the #1 spot among adults 18-49.
