"Friday Night Lights" Tackles Racism

NBC's excellent character drama "Friday Night Lights" set in the heart of Texas continues tonight with the conclusion of a two-part episode that tackles a tough subject that has haunted the show from the sidelines from the beginning - race.

Last week, a racist comment from an assistant coach has provoked a walkout by the team's black players, led by star running back Brian "Smash" Williams (Gaius Charles).

Now, solving the problem falls to Coach Taylor — star Kyle Chandler, whose only hope to win the upcoming playoff game is to get the players back, and he may not be able to do that without sacrificing his authority or integrity.

While Coach Taylor deliberates between firing one of his best coaches and succumbing to his players' demands, Julie's (Aimee Teegarden) friendship with Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) becomes more and more destructive.

Meanwhile, Jason (Scott Porter) makes a life-changing decision and Matt (Zach Gilford) does whatever he can to win Julie back. With some of their best players protesting, will Dillon be able to come out with a victory come Friday?

Before you check out the Hollywood rounds of the American Idol contest and see the best episode of ABC's "Lost" yet, make sure you take a look at this truly exceptional drama (NBC, 8pm), one that does not shy away from dealing with racial tensions, and does so in a manner that will not insult your intelligence.

And have I mentioned that Kyle Chandler gives an electrifying performance of his career?
