"Desperate Housewives" Mystery Recap (Gary Cole Arrives on Wisteria Lane)
Earlier this week it was reported that former "Midnight Caller" star Gary Cole would be joining "Desperate Housewives" in the role of Katherine Mayfair's (Dana Delany) ex-husband, as part of this year's mystery arc. Have you already forgotten what the mystery is about? Here's a little recap.
Katherine Mayfair lived with her former husband and small daughter Dylan on Wisteria Lane in the 1990s. Her neighbor Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher) was one of her closest friends at the time and their daughters loved riding bicycle and playing together.
One night something horrible happened at the Mayfair residence and the family took off the following day in a rush, leaving Susan and the other neighbors confused. The house they lived in belonged to Katherine's aunt Mrs. Sims.
After the ailing Mrs. Sims went to a retirement home she rented the house. One of her tenants was Susan's husband Mike Delfino. Carlos Solis also stayed in the house, before the Mayfairs suddenly reappeared in the summer of 2007.
Susan and her friends learned Katherine was now married to a younger man, a gynecologist named Adam (Nathan Fillion), who left his lucrative position in a Chicago hospital to move to Fairview.
Her daughter Dylan (Lyndsay Fonseca), now a teenage girl, was however very strange now. She appeared to have forgotten Julie and the time she spent on Wisteria Lane. As if she was not the same girl who used to live with her mom there in the 1990s.
We learn that Katherine has told Dylan (and later the other neighbors on Wisteria Lane) that her former husband was a horrible man who used to hit them and she prevented her daughter from seeing "that monster."
It however seems that there is much more to the story as Katherine is still troubled by the events that took place over a decade ago. A dent in the floor in the room on the top floor of the house indicates where the mysterious incident occurred.
As health of Katherine's aunt Mrs. Sims gets worse, on her death bed, she is wrecked with guilt over the horrible event at the Mayfair house she helped cover up and wants to tell Dylan the truth.
A suddenly cold Katherine would not even hear of that and prevents the old woman from talking to her daughter. Before she dies, Mrs. Sims leaves behind a note with her confession for Dylan which ends up under the bed.
Meanwhile in a separate development, it was discovered the Mayfairs were forced to leave Chicago after a patient named Sylvia, that Adam denied sleeping with, accused him of sexual harassment and threatened to press charges.
Adam however did cheat with Sylvia and Katherine realizes he lied to her when a mentally disturbed Sylvia arrives on Wisteria Lane to try to get Adam back. Sylvia consequently dies in the tornado that wreaks havoc in Fairview.
Katherine decides to kick her husband out of her home, but after Adam finds the mysterious note from her aunt, he realizes his wife had lied to him about her former husband, as she was the one who did something wrong. Adam tells Katherine that he is actually leaving her.
Meanwhile, although the Mayfairs tried to destroy the incriminating message in fire, Dylan finds the ripped pieces, puts them together and remains shocked when she finally learns her mother's secret.
In the remaining 7 episodes of the season, we will finally learn what really happened at the Mayfair residence that fateful night over 10 years ago, as Gary Cole joins the show as Katherine's ex-husband.
Based on what we have seen thus far, I would personally think that Katherine and her husband may have had a fight in which their daughter Dylan was accidentally killed.
Of course, that would mean the girl who now lives with the Mayfairs had to be somehow secretly adopted. Could she perhaps be Katherine's husband's illegitimate daughter that they fought over in the first place? Just a theory. I hope the writers have a much better plan.
"Desperate Housewives" returns April 13 at 9/8c. ABC will air 5 regular episodes and then a 2-hour 4th season finale on May 18. "Desperate Housewives" has already been picked up for a 5th season.
