TiVo Ratings: "Grey's Anatomy" Top TiVo Show

"Grey's Anatomy" was the highest rated program in TiVo Homes with 27% of subscribers either watching the show live or on time-shifted basis. Also, "Private Practice," "The Bionic Woman" and "Dirty Sexy Money" were the only freshman series to crack the top 5 on any given night.

Nielsen will release overall DVR ratings for the premiere week (September 24-30, 2007) tomorrow giving the networks a better understanding which freshman series clicked with the audience and which did not.

Late last week however the TiVo company was a little faster and released its premiere week ratings, giving us a little taste of what we can expect to see tomorrow.

The overall conclusion is that most TiVo homes prefer to watch shows at their own convenience. Apart from live sporting events, time-shifted viewing in homes that own TiVo normally accounts for two thirds of any show's total audience.

For example, only about 7% of TiVo homes watched the #1 show "Grey's Anatomy" live, while an additional 20% recorded it to watch it on time-shifted basis. On the other hand, only 0.7% of TiVo users recorded NFL football, while 8.4% watched it live.

DVR penetration in the US went up from 9% in September 2006 to 20% in September 2007 and it continues to rise which is why it falsely appears that the ratings of some hit shows went dramatically down in the past year.
