Jennifer Aniston, who recently portrayed a lesbian on an episode of the FX series "Dirt," received GLAAD's Vanguard Award for increasing the visibility and understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
The actress appeared to be moved to be joining such past Vanguard Award recipients as Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Whoopi Goldberg, Vanessa Redgrave, Shirley MacLaine and Charlize Theron.
Actor Jake Gyllenhaal who became friends with Aniston while filming "The Good Girl" presented her with the award.
"I want to thank GLAAD for their steadfast commitment to opening people's minds," Aniston said in her acceptance speech.
"This is called the Vanguard Award which in some ways suggests I'm at the forefront. But I'm here with you tonight to say that I'm proud to stand not in front of you, but I stand right beside you. I commend you."
