TV Ratings: "American Idol" Reigns Supreme Despite Fall
"American Idol" lost almost 6 million viewers last night as opposed to its gigantic premiere one week ago. Nevertheless the reality contest managed to beat out all four competing networks combined.
Plummeting from 36,94 million viewers (last week's 2-hour average) to "only" 31,17 million, FOX's "American Idol" won the 8pm hour as it switched back to its standard 60-minute format.
If we only compare the 8-9pm timeslots a week ago and last night, the loss was much smaller - about 3 million.
"The State of The Union Address" was telecast at 9pm on four networks scoring a total of 34,46 million viewers, most of them coming from FOX (10,49 million).
The CW's "Veronica Mars" aired opposite President Bush, but scored only 3,29 million viewers, down 200,000 viewers from its season high on November 28.
Earlier in the evening, The CW aired the first fresh episode of "Gilmore Girls" at 8pm since December 5. Airing opposite idol, the drama hit season low 3,65 million.
