"LOST" KICKS OFF WITH A BANG

The news agencies have told you today that the fans of ABC's "Lost" swamped Waikiki on Saturday to see the cast of the mega-popular drama during a special screening of the third season finale. What they did not tell you is what happens during the first 5 minutes of the episode that the network promoted for many weeks as "breathless".

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ THE LINES BELOW IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS ON THE THIRD SEASON PREMIERE OF "LOST"

You probably know that the second season was all about 'the hatch'. And you may have heard that the third season will be all about 'the Others'. Well, the second season started with a bang and introduced us to 'the hatch' in a very clever scene with Desmond on a bike listening to the groovy Mama Cass song "Make Your Own Kind of Music" (as the viewers wondered 'who the hell is that and what are we looking at?').

Now, the third season starts with a bang of gigantic proportions as a woman named Juliet (ER's Elizabeth Mitchell) bakes muffins in her kitchen in an ordinary home listening to Petula Clark's "Downtown" and joins her friends in the living room and the viewers are once again asking themselves 'who the hell is that and what are we looking at'?

Suddenly the book club get-together is interrupted as there is an earthquake and the people run outside. In the street, people are running from all sides looking up into the sky and they see a spectacular sight - a plane breaks into three pieces and crashes down. Among them, Henry Gale rises to the occasion and sends two men - Ethan and Goodwin ('The Others' who appeared in season 1 and 2, respectively) to the crash sites to infiltrate the survivors.

It is at that moment that we realize this is a flashback to September 2004 when Oceanic flight 815 crashed on the island and the earthquake was caused by Desmond at the hatch.

The camera rises above "The Others" and we see a truly amazing view of their modern city on the other side of the mountain, close to our characters who crashed on the beach.
