"Kidnapped" To Be Released On DVD

First NBC announced it would wrap the production on its lackluster abduction drama "Kidnapped", then it moved the show to The Death Zone a.k.a. Saturday night and now the show is gone for good following dismal numbers it posted in two weekend airings. Only 5 of the 13 episodes have aired before the network decided to swing the axe. Still, the fans of the show may see how it all ends after all and the studio that produced it may even come out profitable.

Although Sony Pictures Television shelled out 40 million dollars to produce the series, expensive license fees for NBC as well as aggressive international sales are about to recover the costs. Furthermore, all 13 episodes will be released on a special DVD box set in 2007 making the entire project profitable despite the abrupt network cancellation.

Normally, studios see their return on investment only after 4-5 years of production and 80-100 episodes in the can, which is why this business model may not work for all the expensive series that fail to find an audience. As evident in NBC's recent 8pm strategy, the networks will also be more cautious when greenlighting such costly projects.

"KIDNAPPED" RETURNS TONIGHT

If you are among the 5 people watching NBC's critically-acclaimed abduction mystery thriller "Kidnapped" or a Dana Delany or Jeremy Sisto fan or you are simply looking for qaulity entertainment on what is the most boring night on US television than look no further than NBC, 9/8c. On tonight's episode, Virgil gets ready for surgery just as King realizes there is something wrong - the hired assasin known as "The Accountant" attempts to pose as a surgeon to "tie up loose ends".

NBC TO BURN OFF "KIDNAPPED" ON SATURDAYS

NBC has just announced it will move the rookie drama "Kidnapped" to low-rated Saturday nights effective October 21 (a repeat of this week's episode airs this weekend, sports programming airs next weekend).

Earlier this week NBC informed the show's producers that it is pulling the plug. The network will however honour its 13-episode commitment and air the remaining 10 episodes through the end of the year.

The producers of the Dana Delany series have promised to wrap the abduction mystery up. The show joins CBS' Ray Liotta action series "Smith" as first casualties of the new TV season. More are expected to be announced soon.

MUST YOU SEE NBC?

When NBC concluded the 10-year run of one of their greatest sitcom hits "Friends" in May of 2004 many had expected the Peacock network to struggle to maintain their dominant position in the ratings. What they did not know is how fast the No.1 would fall to the bottom.

Home to many of the greatest hits in the history of television (The Cosby Show, Miami Vice, Cheers, Hill Street Blues, ALF, L.A. Law, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Seinfeld, Will & Grace, ER, Frasier, The Apprentice, Law & Order), NBC coined the expression Must-See TV to promote their mega-successful line-up of Thursday night programming, the most lucrative platform in TV advertising.

In 2004, the network failed to find suitable replacement for their aging or ending hits, and by late 2005 not only had they fallen to the fourth place in the ratings, but their greatest hit had become the Howie Mandel hosted "Deal or No Deal" ridiculed by critics as "That Suitcase Game Show".

That may all change now as the network has received enormous critical praise and Internet buzz for their new line of shows. They all agree NBC has the strongest program development this season.

One year ago, the network was praised for putting critically-acclaimed sitcoms My Name Is Earl and The Office on the schedule, yet their results in the ratings have been mixed. Will the same happen this year or will riskier and more creative choices pay off?

The premiere dates of the new NBC series are as follows:

Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip - Monday, September 18 at 10/9c
Kidnapped - Wednesday, September 20 at 10/9c

Heroes - Monday, September 25 at 9/8c

Friday Night Lights (pictured above) - Tuesday, October 3 at 8/7c

30 Rock - Wednesday, October 11 at 8/7c

Twenty Good Years - Wednesday, October 11 at 8:30/7:30c

Labels: 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Heroes, Kidnapped, NBC, Studio 60, TV Business
