Rebecca Romijn Demoted on "Ugly Betty"
In an interview with New York Post, Rebecca Romijn reveals extensive behind the scenes changes at "Ugly Betty" and says her transgender character Alexis Meade will be back next season on a recurring basis.
The actress says: "They made a tremendous amount of changes, especially with the writing staff [during the writer's strike], and while I know I'll be coming back next season, with all the changes, I'm not sure they can take care of my character they way they have been. So I'll be leaving, back in a recurring capacity, but it's time for me to leave and find something else."
I really adore Rebecca and I thought her Alexis was a great addition to the show, especially since it broke new ground for transgender characters on television. But the writers did seem to have run out of fresh ideas for her this season.
I am eager to learn more about the changes and what it will mean for other characters on the show. "Ugly Betty" has softened in the ratings this year and I wonder what ABC execs are attributing those losses to.

the loss in viewership, i think comes the over the top, and almost cartoonish writing this year which has shifted away from Betty's dealing with the people at Mode in order to find her voice as a writer to stories bordering on soap opera parodies lie sperm theft! from a dead guy no less...
as far as alexis meade goes...her transgender-ness may have been an exellent "shocking" moment, but i'm not they know how to, or even want to write for a tansgender character beyond parody. i think she's great, and i'm going to miss her.
I am such a huge fan of the show. It feels right now that they are having a few issues establishing the true "lead roles". Obviously Betty, obviously Daniel. I am extremely disappointed about Alexis being demoted, Rebecca Romijn is absolutely amazing - the range she has in these roles that are focused so much on her appearance (X-Men) is tremendous. She has impeccable comic timing, she is easy on the eyes, smart, and a joy to watch. I really, really miss her already. I thought they would address so many issues through Alexis, there were so many ways to go with her, so many things to explore. It surprises me. But the show is fabulous, and I think it has maintained its momentum very well.
