Top-5 New TV Shows This Week
Since I'm online this weekend, I might as well run down the top-5 freshman shows that ruled the Nielsens in the past week (I normally do that on Mondays). Last week Christina Applegate's new sitcom "Samantha Who" shot straight to the top. Did the beauty manage to hold on to her crown? And what does the rest of the top-5 look like?
Not only did "Samantha Who" stay at the top beating all freshman shows including her predecessor "Private Practice," but the sitcom also earned "The #1 Comedy on TV" status as well, beating its CBS competitor "Two and a Half Men." With over 14 million viewers tuning in, this was one of this season's best week #2 retentions.
NBC's "The Bionic Woman" continued its decline in total viewers, but the show still manages to pull off a decent performance in the 18-49 demo.
The big news of the week was the growth for CBS' rookie comedy "The Big Bang Theory" which not only exceeded the numbers of its lead-in "How I Met Your Mother" (as it always does), but also rose to #3 on the 18-49 chart.
Despite its growth this week "Dirty Sexy Money" (3.2) is out of the top-5, but the soap did manage to surpass fellow ABC freshman series "Pushing Daisies" which also fell out of the top-5 with a troubling decline in the 18-49 demo (3.0).
Despite losing almost 2 million viewers since the premiere "Women's Murder Club" is still a top-5 new show in total viewers, although its low 18-49 rating (2.0) makes it impossible for Angie and the gang to get anywhere near the top-5.
Top-5 New Shows In Total Viewers:
1. SAMANTHA WHO, ABC (14.35 million)
2. PRIVATE PRACTICE, ABC (11.77 million)
3. PUSHING DAISIES, ABC (9.45 million)
4. WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB (8.9 million)
5. THE BIG BANG THEORY (8.72 million)
Top-5 New Shows in 18-49 Demo:
1. SAMANTHA WHO, ABC (4.6)
2. PRIVATE PRACTICE, ABC (4.5)
3. THE BIG BANG THEORY, CBS (3.5)
4. THE BIONIC WOMAN, NBC (3.3)
BIG SHOTS, ABC (3.3)
The rankings are based on fast nationals for the week October 21-26, 2007.

Do you like Samantha Who? I am still undecided. At first I thought it was a Jake in Progress or that type of show that tries to be too cute for its own good. I think what is holding the show is Christina Applegate's great comedic timing. Everyone is wondering if its going to crater after Dancing with the Stars though. But as I recall, all of the other comedies that ABC put on after DWTS pulled in 12 million at most?
Funny you're asking about that, because I just got around to watching the 'Samantha Who' pilot.
I HATE IT! ...lol...
I'm shouting, because I really like Christina Applegate and I absolutely adore Jean Smart, but I just thought the show wasn't funny.
I'm really curious how it does after DWTS is over.
I heard the 2nd episode was better than the pilot, so I'll give it a chance since I love the actresses, but I just don't have a good feeling about it.
I hope Women's Murder Club can keep an audience retain its week 3 audience next week. It's an amazing show that deserves a chance.
I love The Big Bang Theory. Best new sitcom in years. It is really funny. If you are not watching it on Mondays at 8:30 on CBS you do not know what you are missing.
How is BS doing better than PD in the demo? It just is not right.
