LOST #3.07: "Not In Portland": Kate and Sawyer Escape
Alex offers to help Kate and Sawyer escape if they save her brainwashed boyfriend Karl; Ben wakes up in the middle of his own surgery while bleeding to death and makes sure Jack saves his life; and a long-awaited flashback reveals what circumstances led Juliet to the island.
A truly powerful Juliet-centric episode opened the second part of the current season of "Lost" for the first time flashing back to an earlier life on one of the people we have simply known as "The Others".
As it turns out, Juliet was being courted by "Mittelos Bioscience", a research group that — as its representative Mr. Alpert admits — is "not quite in Portland." One suspects that "not quite in Portland" actually means "nowhere near Portland."
In a truly fascinating character development we get to see that Juliet has evolved in the three years that she has been on the island from a woman who tearfully says "I'm not a leader" to a woman who shoots Pickett and plots to kill Ben in cold blood.
In one of the creepiest moments of the season thus far, the manipulative Ben woke up on the operating table showing off his enormous power by turning the situation into his own favor, all while lying helpless with his spine exposed. A truly brilliant villain.
Alex, who conveniently had access to a boat, used Kate and Sawyer to help her captive boyfriend Karl escape the torture of being brainwashed with psychedelic video containing possible Lost-mythology clues.
The messages that flashed for a split second read: "Plant a good seed and you will joyfully gather fruit. Everything changes. We are the causes of our own suffering. God loves you as he loved Jacob. Think about your life".
The grand revelation of the episode: Alex is Ben's daughter. Obviously, we have known Alex was abducted as a child and taken away from her mother, "the French woman". Could Ben have biologically fathered the child, though?
The episode culminated with Alex's tearful farewell to an exhausted Karl and Kate's weeping retelling of Jack's story before a stunned Sawyer, Juliet and Tom, a.k.a. "Zeke", a.k.a. "Mr. Friendly".
Speaking of whom, is it just me or is "Mr. Friendly" being too friendly with Jack? What happens now that The Others know about Julet's plot to kill Ben? And will Kate follow Jack's advice and not come back to get him?
As far as the flashback, whatever happened to Juliet's cancer-stricken yet pregnant sister? What exactly did Juliet discover that made her research so interesting for The Others?
And finally, Juliet has been on the island since late summer of 2001. Or to be precise: three years, two months and 28 days. Surely this has nothing to do with 9/11. Or does it? I sure hope not.
The spoilers for the next episode have revealed that we finally learn why "The Others" want children so desperately. Also, look for the return of a tail section survivor, the flight attendant Cindy, who went missing last season.

We missed you Justin!
I think the episode was brilliant, too bad it didn't do as well in the ratings, but at 10pm it did what I expected.
As for Tom, I'm sure he is gay! He told Kate "You're not my type" and then when he introduced himself to Jack (kinda weird cuz when he was Zeke, he was cold as ice when he said "This is OUR island, Jack") I definitely got this "yeah you are hot Jack, I'd like to get to know you better" vibe. But it could just be me LOL...
Aaah, you're so sweet. Yes, I like to do the occasional disappearing act. :)
Yes it was a brilliant episode. I don't get why everyone is so upset we didn't get too many stories with other survivors.
I could watch Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Juliet and Ben every single day. That's how amazing those characters are.
Btw, Zeke sure has refined taste. :)
