VIDEO: Britney Spears at 2008 MTV VMAs

The meanies among us may have been disappointed when Britney Spears pulled herself together and appeared on stage all sparkly and sober at last night's MTV Video Music Awards, avoiding a disaster of Brittastic proportions, such as her infamous Las Vegas fiasco, exactly a year ago.

An opening comedy segment with Superbad's Jonah Hill, a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd as she appeared on stage to introduce Rihanna, and later, three Moonmen including video of the year, made Versace-clad Spears' appearance at the overall safe and tedious 25th Anniversary VMA telecast last night, a much-needed success.

Then again, would she have pulled it off if she'd had to actually perform last night?

MTV's 'The Hills' Stars Bitch It Up

"Laguna Beach" spin-off "The Hills" is coming back for a third season Monday night on MTV as its catfighting stars Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag bitch it up for the tabloids.

MTV's highest-rated series pulled in 2,7 million viewers last winter when former "Laguna" babe Lauren Conrad crossed claws with roommate Heidi Montag who began dating scene-stealing hunk Spencer Pratt.

The show began in the spring of 2006 when MTV realized "Laguna Beach" may have run its course and hired Conrad to narrate and star in the spin-off the followed her to Los Angeles and internship at Teen Vogue.

The reality series became a phenomenon when its young stars became the staple of tabloid culture induced by online gossip gangstas. Mix in a very public feud between Conrad and Montag who would no longer give interviews together as well as a sex tape no one has even seen yet and you have a sure hit.

Now as the show enters its third cycle, it appears its hey day is still ahead. Catch the season premiere at 10 p.m. Monday, August 13 on MTV. Check out the promo stills and a video sneak peek below.

MTV Movie Awards Get Dirrrty

Oh, boy. These ain't no Oscars. When MTV puts together an awards show, you know it's going to get dirty. Comedian Sarah Silverman hosted the glitzy cable extravaganza "MTV Movie Awards" in Hollywood tonight cracking ruthless jokes about celebrities. Foul language after the jump.

Silverman began saying it has been a great year for giant movies such as "300" which apparently got its name when measuring how gay it was on the scale of 1 to 10.

She then called "Spiderman 3" racist because the superhero turned bad once he got black. The producer then cut to Samuel L. Jackson who didn't seem too amused by the joke, which Silverman immediately acknowledged.

She then seemed mesmerized by the present star power, including Jack Nicholson who she said actually was in every one of her favorite actresses.

After she got little laughter for her joke about lengthy trilogies she wasn't going to see because she didn't like any movies longer than Cisco Adler's balls she told the crowd: "Google it! It's a great later-laugh."

Silverman also said it was a huge year for the paparazzi which made many famous vaginas even "famouser," in fact she could see 3 in the audience right there. Wait! There's Tobey Maguire. Make that 4.

Of course, Silverman took a jab at Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton (and Alec Baldwin in the process.)

"Whatever happened to that poor sweet freckled-faced little girl who only went through rehab once? She needs structure, she needs a father figure. She needs someone who will take time and tell her that she is a rude little pig."

"In a couple of days Paris Hilton is going to jail," at this point the crowd cheered. Unlike Lohan, Hilton WAS in the audience and the camera panned to her face as she tried to smile and come across composed.

"The judge says there won't be any special treatment, but I hear - to make her feel more comfortable and pretty - the guards are going to paint the bars to look like penises. I just worry that she's going to break her teeth on those things."

Paris was no longer laughing, but she did raise her head in a "hit me all you want" kind of manner. I actually felt sorry for her at this point.

Finally she closed singing a song for the button censors: "Fuck and shit and ass and balls and a huge dirty piece of watery shit on a sandwich made of lumpy hairy flabbity floppity mother fucking tits..."

Wow. I get that MTV wants to be irreverent and controversial, but when did the opening monologue stop having to be funny? You can use the expletives all you want MTV, but please make it more funny next time.

Chris and his band have enjoyed immense chart-topping success with their debut album outselling big names such as Gwen Stefani. In fact "Daughtry" is the fastest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history.

MTV's "Total Request" Taped

Two weeks ago, MTV began taping "Total Request Live" two days a week in an effort to save money. After live shows air Monday and Wednesday afternoons, shows are then taped for the following day, AP reports.

Live-to-tape format is standard in network TV, which is how late-night shows hosted by David Letterman, Jay Leno and Jon Stewart are done. MTV has however always touted its interactivity with the audience, who vote online for their favorite videos.

TRL is the third longest-running program in the network's history. Following its September 1998 debut, it became the epicenter of the teen pop scene with the likes of Britney Spears, N'Sync, Cristina Aguilera and the Backstreet Boys.

Artists go to drop their "brand spankin' new" music, movie stars to tout their hot films and celebrities just to stay celebrities — sometimes to disastrous effect, like Mariah Carey's 1999 ice cream cart incident.

At its peak in 1999, "TRL" had 757,000 viewers a day, with 346,000 of them aged 12 to 17, according to Nielsen Media Research.

So far this year, the show — now seen at 3:30 p.m. ET — averages 351,000 viewers a day, Nielsen said. The 12-to-17-year-old audience is only 113,000, half what it was only two years ago.

Original host Carson Daly left in 2003. A rotating group of MTV VJs are hosts now: Damien Fahey, Vanessa Minnillo, Susie Castillo, Cipha Sounds, La La (Alani Vazquez) and Stephen Colletti.

MTV Networks said last month it was cutting 250 jobs and shutting down MTV World, a package of digital channels geared to Americans of Asian descent. The network said
it is trying to consolidate resources at its Times Square studio, where "TRL" is filmed.

MTV however states that despite the change in production format it remains firmly committed to the show as the cornerstone of its schedule.

VIDEO: Katharine McPhee's Surprise MTV TRL Visit

"American Idol" star Katharine McPhee made a "surprise visit" to MTV's Times Square Studios in New York City on Monday and made an appearance on the live TRL show. Here are some stills as well as the video of the appearance.

Simon Cowell recently said Taylor Hicks should not have been selected "American Idol" last year and he wanted the Los Angeles native Katharine to win the competition. Kat responds to those comments in the segment, as well as the recent Tyra Banks "boob incident."

Although McPhee has not been able to match the success of yet another Idol runner up Chris Daughtry in album sales, her self-titled album which was released earlier this year has generated positive buzz.

Also check below a recent video of Katharine performing her catchy single "I'm Over It" on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
