Is Connor Paolo's "Gossip Girl" Character Gay?

Will Connor Paolo's "Gossip Girl" character Eric Van Der Woodsen come out of the closet when the teen drama returns to the CW in April (as many fans believe following a TV Guide report) or is one of the 3 principal male characters on the show about to lock lips with his new boyfriend?


According to early spoilers, Dan Humfrey's sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen) who appeared to be developing a crush on Serena's (Blake Lively) twinky brother Eric (Paolo), is getting a new Johnny Depp lookalike love interest, which means her special bond with Eric may indeed remain only friendship. But is that enough to suspect Eric is gay?



Although he is growing up in a fairly liberal environment as part of Ney York's elite Upper East Side, Eric may indeed be struggling to come to terms with his own identity as the show's pilot revealed he attempted suicide following severe depression.



Penn Badgley's character Dan is gay in the books, but the writers seem to have taken a different route with him. Ironically, last October Badgley discussed sexual orientation of his character's literary inspiration and said:



"Yeah, I think he’s straight-up gay in the books. But I don’t think network TV really has the balls to make one of their [teenage] series regulars gay. Let’s say the show builds up to become a big hit, then I think they’d maybe explore it in year three or four. It would be an interesting thing to do. It could bring in a whole different demographic."

The drama will prove him wrong when it returns April 13 in its new Monday night time slot at 8/7c with 5 all-new episodes.
