Will Shonda Rhimes MerDer "Grey's Anatomy"?

I smell trouble at Seattle Grace. Not only may the writers' strike cut the current season of "Grey's Anatomy" to 11 episodes (6 of which have already aired), but Patrick Dempsey says in today's TV Guide News Report his McDreamy character and the show heroine Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) may be hitting Splitsville for good. And then, if the worst happens, we might not see fresh episodes of the show till September 2008. That's not good, right?

Dempsey says: "Derek and Meredith’s relationship has gone as far as it can go. I don’t think it’s going to go unless she commits to marrying him or goes into therapy and starts working on herself. We’ll have a cliff-hanger with this last show and there will be a resolve that seems to be permanent."

Of course the powers that be behind the show may only be teasing the audience before the final episode this fall ends with a marriage proposal. Whatever the case, it better be good, because if the show disappears from the schedule for 9 months, the last thing you want to leave behind is millions of pissed off fans.

well, i think that as a writer, shonda rhimes has the power to do anything she wants with her show and that includes breaking up the main couple. writers shouldnt make creative decisions based on negative fan reactions. that would just spoil the flow of ideas onto the page. so leaving behind millions of disappointed fans is an inconvenience, but not an unforgivable thing.

Personally, it pisses me off that meredith and derek wont be together, but to go as far as saying i wont watch the show is a bit extreme. There will always be something going on between them...its practically a requirement for the show now. I love Grey's Anatomy no matter what happens i trust Shonda, and she knows that the viewers want Mer/Der together. So i'll always keep watching because eventually there will be a mer/der marriage (or at least i can keep telling myself that)

Hello? Anybody remember Ross and Rachel? They broke up in season 2 or 3 and his final reunion (except for the quick wedding and the baby) was in season 10!!

My point is that MerDer's final is a good thing for the show! More drama and new characters and storylines means new life for the show!

even if mer/der break temporarilly break up (i mean c'mon, i think we all know that at the end of the series they're going to be together), they'll still always interact and still have the great chemistry that we know and love. for most of season 2 they weren't together yet there were still many great mer/der moments in each episode. i think b/c their relationship has basically hit a plateu pulling them apart might be what they need before they get closer.
