Debra Messing's "Starter Wife" Opens Strong
Former "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing, who attended the CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday night posing with designer Michael Kors, has plenty of reasons to smile about. Her comeback series, the USA network mini "The Starter Wife" got off to a strong start with 5,4 million people tuning in last Thursday.
Messing, whose hit NBC comedy ended in May 2006 - an event which was, as she puts it, emotionally overwhelming - approached the series as an opportunity to shed off her well-known sitcom character Grace Adler.
"The Starter Wife" premiered to mixed reviews - USA Today called it "well-made fluff," while Variety branded its characters "cardboard cutouts the audience is unlikely to care about much".
However, the 2-hour telecast was a success. "The Starter Wife" was cable's biggest original series of the year and it also gave USA its best Thursday night ratings since the premiere of "The 4400" three years ago.
The remaining 4 episodes will air on Thursdays at 9 in June.
