TV Ratings: "Desperate Housewives" Hits Series Low

The Alphabet net's class of 2004 is not doing too well. Following recent ratings troubles of ABC's "LOST", the network's other groundbreaking series "Desperate Housewives," now in its third season, hit series low of 15,66 million viewers last night, well below 20+ million it used to average till January of this year.

Despite that, the sudser not only won its timeslot, but was the most watched program on all networks in the US last night. The trend is however worrying. In its first red-hot season, the dramedy pulled in as many as 30 million viewers for its May 2005 season finale episode, with 23 million tuning in regularly.

Marc Cherry and his team of writers have recently been given credit for putting the show back on its feet creatively following a lackluster second season. So why are the viewers abandoning the series? Can we blame it on Easter? Or the return of "The Sopranos"? Or the amazing "Planet Earth" series on the Discovery Channel?

Elsewhere, truly hideous results for The CW - it's on the fence drama "One Tree Hill" scored only 850,000 viewers followed by an all-new "7th Heaven" with 2,12 million viewers. Now those are some hideous ratings.

Elsewhere, ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" scored 10,98 million viewers placing second in total viewers behind CBS's "Without a Trace" (14,08 million). Despite CBS's 3+ million advantage, ABC was well ahead CBS in the much more important 18-49 demo (4.1 vs. 3.6), which means the CBS procedural is more popular with senior citizens.

In my opinion the reason why Housewives didn't pull in as many viewers last night is because it was the first all new episode since March 4th, it was Easter Sunday, the Sopranos is back for its final run and possibly the absence of Marcia Cross. If it was the most watched program in America last night then it's still doing alright. Over the summer ABC really need to do something to get the Housewives and Lost audiences up by the fall - it's a real shame two great shows are 'failing'.

I agree. I blame the hiatus and Easter. If it's still the highest rated show on Sunday night, then that's still great. It just means that less people were watching TV, hence lower ratings. I believe ratings will climb in coming weeks as they are all new episodes. If ratings are still "low," then we should worry. But right now we're still good.

It was the hiatus and Easter. I think ABC needs to move Lost back to 8PM next Winter, and DH needs to be run in a more solid block.

ABC has already renewed DH up to its 7 years, so we don't have to worry about it getting canceled. Besides, DH's lowest ratings are still far better than most other shows. No need to panic!

Just a second. ABC has a contract with Marc Cherry and principal members of the cast for 7 years, but they have only renewed the show for a 4th season so far.

That means, Gonzalo, the show is not getting canceled. If the ratings do continue to slide I can imagine the show lasting less than 7 years.

Having said that, I do have to agree it must have been the hiatus and Easter as well as The Sopranos and the absence of Bree.

The good news is we get a new episode each week all the way through to the end of the season, so we'll see if "Housewives" pick up a momentum in the ratings or if there really is a reason to worry.

Maybe next season the show coud be paired off with Grey's 2.0. I'm just worried the ratings for "Brothers & Sisters" would go dramatically down is that show moved. Although, I can imagine that many of you guys don't really care about that one.

LoL, Justin, you're too funny, of course we care about B&S.

But I think B&S can stand on its own and because it's on a Sunday night most people are asleep, so that doesn't help ratings at all.

B&S to me is BS, lol. I'd love to see them put B&S on Saturday nights at 10 and put Private Practice after DH. I really think it was the Easter Sunday and the hiatus that brought DH down. Most people probably didn't even know it was on.
