ABC Signs An Eight-Figure $$$ Deal To Keep "Desperate Housewives" On Air Through 2011

FEBRUARY 21, 2007: The ABC TV network and "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry have just signed what is expected to be one of the biggest deals in TV business this year.

Variety reports tonight that the 4-year 8-figure deal will keep Marc Cherry at the helm of ABC's Sunday night drama ensuring creative continuity of the series through its seventh season.

The studio has quietly negotiated separate deals with all key members of the cast that will keep them on the show for at least as long as Marc Cherry is attached to the project.

Neither Cherry nor the studio made any comments with regard to financial details of the deal, but it is believed in the industry the contract is worth more than 15 million dollars.

Cherry says he does not plan to develop any other shows, but rather fully focus on "Desperate Housewives". If he does do any other work it will be under the ABC corporate umbrella.

Also, in a statement resembling that of LOST producers who want their show to end on a creative high, Cherry says he hopes ABC will end "Desperate Housewives" at the end of his 4-year deal.

Cherry says he believes 7 seasons would be the most ideal length for the series and he does not want anyone else to run the show past that point and see it slowly fade away.

ABC execs says Cherry has always said to them this was a seven-year show, but they insist "they will cross that bridge when they come to it".

Nevertheless, they said they would be silly to continue the show without Marc Cherry's involvement as he has proven to be a very capable showrunner who was able to overcome creative hurdles of the 2nd season and put the show back on track.

Cherry says after "Desperate Hosuewives" ends he plans to move to New York and write musicals.

So basically, after 2011, Tv will suck again, as most of the shows that are hot now, will probably not be here after that. The only one I can even imagine being on in the 2011-2012 season is Grey's Anatomy. Oh well, I guess that there is always a chance for ABC to find something intresting to put on, although I have been very disappointed at not getting anything since the 04-05 season from them. I guess there is always the possible chance that Traveler will become a hit.

Marc Cherry has always said the show would go on for 7 seasons, so I'm really happy that ABC has sealed the deal. :)

It's kind of funny that Desperate Housewives will finish by the time I graduate from school.
