"Sex and the City" Scores #1 at Box Office
They knew it would be huge, but no one really expected "Sex and the City: the Movie" to go this far. The R-rated female romantic comedy grossed $55.7 million in 3,285 theaters ranking No. 1 in North America this weekend.
The flick opened as the biggest R-rated comedy motion picture ever and the 5th biggest R-rated film ever released (behind The Matrix, The Passion Of The Christ, 300, and Hannibal).
The movie also scored 3rd biggest opening of the year and is already 18th hottest movie of 2008 after only 3 days of release. The analysts expect the movie to go all the way into the top-5.
"Sex and the City: The Movie" has already opened in many international markets which will further add to its box office revenue.
The film was produced for only $65 million. Since distributors usually keep half the revenue, movies are normally expected to earn at least double the production and marketing cost to break even.
It appears that won't be a problem for this movie, so a great portion of the future revenue from pay TV, basic cable, broadcast TV, DVD sales , rentals and other streams will generate huge profits for the studio.
No wonder Warner Bros is already planning a sequel.
