Neil Patrick Harris & Boyfriend David Burtka Step Out @ Emmys 2007 Red Carpet
SEPTEMBER 17, 2007: One small step for "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, one giant leap for the gay mankind. Harris, who came out as a gay man last October in an interview with People Magazine, did as he promised to do several days ago on the Ellen talk show - for the very first time he attended the Emmy Awards show with his long-time boyfriend fellow Broadway and TV actor David Burtka posing together for the photographers on the red carpet.
If I am not mistaken this may very well be the first time a famous gay male actor attended a high-profile event with his partner.
Many famous actors in Hollywood today are gay, but the majority of them remain in the closet, fearful of career repercussions, staging faux relationships or opting not to attend these events or discuss their personal life.
"Grey's Anatomy" star T.R. Knight who also came out last fall may not currently be in a relationship as he attended the event with a female companion.

Way, way, late on the commenting part (though I was looking for this picture, thanks ^.^!) But I think Ian McKellen was the first when he took his then-boyfriend to the Oscars that one year (2001..? 2002...? Blargh I can't remember...)
