"Desperate" Andrew To Become Bisexual?
MAY 2, 2007: Oh, no! Marc Cherry is not about to give us another ABC's Dynasty-style "gay Steven Carrington goes bisexual then goes back to being gay then goes back to being bisexual then ends up being asexual" kind of fiasco, is he?
In an interview with AfterElton.com, the creator and head writer of ABC's "Desperate Housewives" reveals the writers will give Andrew Van De Kamp (Shawn Pyfrom) who has had a tame year much juicier storylines in the dramedy's 4th season.
But the sociopath's statement from the 1st season in which he reveals to Bree's Reverend that he "likes vanilla, but from time to time may feel like chocolate" may actually be true.
"A lot of writers feel that sometimes young boys say 'bisexual' because that’s 'a stop on the way to gay town.' But you know, I actually think it might be fascinating if Andrew experiments, as long as we have some interesting complications from that. I know that so many gay teenagers do 'try it' just to please their parents. So we’ll see. Something shocking would happen as a result," reveals Cherry.
The actor himself may be keen on getting some girl action on the show as he says: "For Shawn the heterosexual male, you know, I’m kind of glad that he doesn’t have a boyfriend. Those love scenes are a little awkward."
Andrea Bowen who plays Julie Mayer on the show however says to "Out in Hollywood": "I want him to have a boyfriend! I want Justin (Ryan Carnes) to come back on the show. I am so proud to be on a show that portrays gay characters and is very open about it. So, I root for Andrew, I'm right there."
In any event, the new storylines have yet to be written, so let us hope whatever creative decisions Marc Cherry and his writing team take, the real winner here is the show itself.
