TV Ratings: 8PM Shows Rise As "Idol" Moves Away

"Friday Night Lights" posted its best ratings since its October 3 premiere (apart from that special Monday night telecast in late October) and ABC comedies were up a notch as "American Idol" moved to 9pm.

FOX's "Bones" opened the night strong for the network with 12,96 million viewers.

With "American Idol" out of the way, ABC's reshuffled comedies were up a notch - "Knights of Prosperity" posted 5,25 million viewers, although it still finished last in the timeslot.

"Friday Night Lights" also benefited from "Idol" airing at 9pm - the character drama scored 6,86 million viewers. According to NBC (whose management allegedly really likes the show), if FNL manages to maintain its audience, it may return for a second season.

"American Idol" of course crushed all competition with 31,45 million viewers, once again beating all 4 competing networks combined. Second in the hour was NBC's game show "Deal or no Deal" with 11,42 million viewers.

Finally, at 10pm NBC's "Medium" grew 13% out of "Deal Or No Deal" and won the timeslot in the 18-49 demo. A repeat of CBS's "CSI: NY" was the leader in total viewers (10,61 million).

Next week, LOST returns at 10pm. Last fall, the island mystery drama averaged about 17 million viewers over its 6 installments. Will it manage to maintain that audience or will it lose any viewers?

  1. Justin, I think that Lost will be lucky to lose only 20% of its viewers. My prediction is the opening will be around 13 to 15 million, its anyone's guess, but it might have alienated fans with the hiatus and change to a later time. And with the weak comedies doing less than 5 million leading into Lost, it doesn't bode well. I am hoping fans will stick with it. It's a slippery slope downhill when a show falls out of favour and Lost is too good a show even with its lags to fall.

  2. That's a pretty ominous prediction, Roland. I guess you could be right. Then again, perhaps some of that "American Idol" audience will switch over to ABC and "Lost" once they're done with FOX.
