Brothers & Sisters #113: "Something Ida This Way Comes"

Were we supposed to hate Nora's passive-aggressive mother Ida who returned for her daughter's surprise medieval birthday bash? What a sweetie! And what an episode, sparkling with great family chemistry, in-your-face closet jokes and Murphy's law.

I realized I was going to be very repetitive in my "Brothers & Sisters" recaps always writing the same old line - this was the best episode so far this season.

But that is hardly a surprise when week after week you get to see such an amazing work in progress.

The writers have truly been able to find the drama's unique voice and they are now building on that foundation making it even more enjoyable and compelling with each episode.

Nora's birthday party was of course a trademark Walker disaster, where anything that could go wrong did go wrong, but this adorable family made it all work out in the end, because that is what they do, they're always there for each other.

I thought Marion Ross did a fabulous job playing Nora's mother (Nora is 60, so what does that make Ida?), bringing tension to the family celebration.

Initially, their relationship reminded me of Nora and Kitty in the drama's early episodes. Quickly, however, Ross and Field gave their characters their own tone in a painful discovery of past misunderstandings.

The Walker family closet was the sight of secret drinking and the source of fitting jokes, such as Kitty asking her brother Kevin if his little boyfriend was in there or the Senator asking Kitty if she was a closet drinker.

Speaking of Jason Lewis, you would think "Sex and the City" vet would be much more relaxed in his tender scenes with Kevin. Then again I suppose romping with Kim Cattrall does not necessarily give you sufficient training for playing Chad Berry.

This is, of course, a relationship bound for heartbreak, but as we have seen many times before, Kevin is only human, smitten with sheer physical attraction.

As for the Senator, what a great casting choice. When Nora tried to cover his eyes while her daughter's sex tape was accidentally being shown Rob Lowe delivers one of the best lines of the evening "Please, I'm in politics. I've pretty much seen everything."

Seeing Justin back from rehab was great, I will really despise the writers if they send him away at the end of the season. They better find a clever way to keep David Annable on board.

Holly was unfortunately away for the second week in a row, but then again I guess William Walker's former mistress attending Nora's 60th birthday party would be a bit of a stretch, so let's just hope Walkers' new business partner returns and brings her daughter Rebecca with her.

There will be no new episode next Sunday; ABC will repeat episode #107 "Northern Exposure".

The week after the drama is pre-empted because of the Super Bowl telecast on CBS.

The next new episode "Valentine's Day Massacre" airs February 11.
