It's Time For "High School Musical 2"

AUGUST 10, 2007: After 6,9 million albums, 7,9 million DVDs, 160 million TV viewers and $500 million in total retail sales, only 7 days have remained until the world premiere of "High School Musical 2," a Disney Channel event.

The original movie which premiered in January 2006 went on to become a global pop culture phenomenon making its young stars like Zac Efron household names while giving kids a positive message of following their dreams despite negative peer pressure.

The movie appears to have very strong staying power - it premiered to an audience of 7,7 million viewers. Its recent 21st telecast still managed to pull in 5,8 million viewers or 75% of the premiere audience.

In the movie, basketball star Troy Bolton (played by Zac Efron) and math wiz Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) reluctantly, then joyfully, sing their hearts out and fall for each other while trying out for East High's annual musical.

Shows like "So You Think You Can Dance," "Dancing With the Stars" and "American Idol," have all made music and dance immensely popular with young audiences across the nation all over again.

Capitalize on the hunger for this type of entertainment by coming up with some catchy tunes, adding a little Zac Efron into the mix, and even building in some sports into the story, and you've got yourself a hit with girls and boys and young and old.

The sequel starts as school lets out, taking the East High Wildcats — including spoiled drama queen Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale), her brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) and Troy and Gabriella's pals Chad (Corbin Bleu) and Taylor (Monique Coleman) — to a ritzy country club for work, play and more music.

Although the sequel may appear somewhat more mature, it is still squeaky-clean fun for general audiences.

Based on the buzz, many analysts are expecting HSM2 to match or exceed the premiere ratings of its predecessor.

Disney is already planning a big-screen HSM that would take the characters through the senior prom and graduation.

HSM has def had an amazing impact on culture...I trust that HSM2 will have the same, clean, fun (if cheesy) appeal that the first did. After seeing Hairspray, I think Zac Efron has gotten even better as an actor and singer, so I'm betting his performance will beat his performance in the first. We'll see!
